NTWWC Funding Crisis Update

Dec 24, 2021

Early Christmas Present for the NTWWC - 24 Dec 2021

On this special Christmas Eve, we are thrilled to announce we have gained funding, including support from a generous donor, that has secured our future for the next few years. This will provide us with some exciting opportunities and we'll share more about this in the New Year.

This funding means we will continue to operate at full capacity (subject to filling staff vacancies).

Thank you to all who supported and advocated for us. Our battle for adequate recurrent funding is not yet over. No further updates or commitments have been received in relation to Recommendation 49 of the Respect@Work Report to provide increased and recurrent funding to working women’s centres. However, for now at least working women in the NT will continue to have a safe place to seek support when things go wrong.

The new funding also gives our team secure employment.

Have a wonderful and safe festive season. It is definitely a more positive feeling for us this year than it was last year leading up to Xmas.

Our Office will be closed 12.30pm Christmas Eve until Tues 4th January.

Kind regards
Nicki and the team at NTWWC

Respect@Work

As we have seen by the recent disclosures of women’s experiences of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace which resulted in a national March4Justice on 15 March 2021, equality, safety and respect for women in the workplace and broader society remains a real issue. This needs to change.

The value that Working Women’s Centres provide to the community in addressing and supporting women experiencing sexual harassment or worst in the workplace was recognised by the Australian Human Rights Commission in its Respect@Work Report released in March 2020 following a national inquiry into sexual harassment in Australian workplaces. Recommendation 49 specifically states that:

"Australian governments provide increased and recurrent funding to working women's centres to provide information, advice and assistance to vulnerable workers who experience sexual harassment, taking into account particular needs of workers facing intersectional discrimination. Australian governments should consider establishing or re-establishing working women's centres in jurisdictions where they do not currently exist."

Making women's workplaces safe and fair is long overdue. Implementation of the Recommendations of the Respect@Work Report starting with Recommendation 49 as an imperative in refunding services currently at risk such as the NTWWC and in Queensland needs to happen now.

Please ask your members of parliament to support implementation of the recommendations of the Respect@Work Report starting with Recommendation 49.

May 2021 Updates

We were very pleased to see the voices of strong women in NT and Federal Parliaments speak out last week in support of the NT Working Women's Centre and for women's safety in the workplace.

Thank you Senator Malarndirri McCarthy and Minister Lauren Moss for your ongoing support and raising these important issues.  #senatormalarndirrimccarthy #laurenmoss

A small win for working women’s centres in the 2021-2022 Federal budget, but still a long road to certainty for NTWWC and working women.

January 2021 Update

The NTWWC has been provided a temporary lifeline by the NT Government through short term funding while we await the outcome of our Women's Leadership and Development grant application with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The NTWWC are grateful to the NT Government, Minister Moss and Territory Families for stepping in to assist us following the non-continuance of our core funding with the Fair Work Ombudsman's Community Engagement grant.

Please help us keep our doors open, contact us with your support and about ways to help.

December 2020 Update

NTWWC core funding will cease on 31 December 2020

We received disappointing news recently that our core funding from the Fair Work Ombudsman under the Federal Community Engagement Grant will not be continuing.

In August, this grant again went up for public tender and unfortunately, the Centre was unsuccessful in securing funding for a further 4 years. This funding that represents 2/3 of our funding will cease on 31 December 2020.

This now places the sustainability of our organisation, and the employment security of our staff in jeopardy - the very organisation and staff that support and assist women in the NT with respect to workplace issues.

We are currently in discussions with the NT Government about what support they are able to provide.

Any financial support can help ensure that a small but highly specialised service, that has been delivering services for women in the NT for 26 years and continued supporting workers and workplaces through COVID is not forced to close.

If you would like to support the NT Working Women’s Centre during this difficult time, you can help us by donating here or registering your interest in other ways to support us at admin@ntwwc.com.au.
