Have Your Say – Living & Working in the NT

We’ve launched an independent research project, funded by the NT Government, to better understand the experiences of women and gender diverse people living and/or working in the Northern Territory.

We want to hear from diverse voices, including Aboriginal people, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and refugee/migrant women, trans, intersex and gender diverse people, including Brotherboys and Sistergirls.
Your input will help identify the challenges, strengths, and changes needed to create inclusive, safe and fair communities and workplaces.

How to participate:
• Complete a short, anonymous survey
• Take part in a one-on-one interview
• Or do both

The national survey of Australia’s family, domestic and sexual violence workforce is now open (2–28 February 2026).

If you work — paid or unpaid — in prevention, response, recovery, policy, peer support, or related sectors (housing, legal, health, youth work and more), your insights matter. This is the first national workforce survey since 2018 and will help shape future policy and support for the sector.

From 25 November, we join the annual global UN Women 16 Days of Activism campaign, calling for the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence against women and girls.

for Online Abuse — highlighting the growing reality that for many women and girls, the digital world has become another site of harm.

Online abuse isn’t “just online.” A single message or comment can escalate into real-world threats and violence. Private photos are stolen. Lies spread within seconds. Locations are tracked. AI is weaponised to create deepfakes designed to shame, silence and control women.

            The reality:

1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime

16–58% of women and girls face digital violence

90–95% of deepfake videos are sexual images of women

Behind every statistic is a real woman or girl whose safety, dignity and wellbeing are impacted — at home, at work, and in the community.

Gender-based violence can affect your ability to work, your job security, your safety at work, and your mental wellbeing.

           National Bullying Prevention Week

This year’s theme — Act On It — is a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in creating safer, more respectful workplaces.

While often seen as a schoolyard issue, workplace bullying is rising in Australia, contributing to our growing mental health crisis. Over a career, many Australians will witness or experience bullying — with serious consequences for individuals and organisations alike.

            The facts:

           • Australia & NZ have the highest global rates of workplace bullying — nearly 1 in 2 (47.9%) people affected – double the global average of 21% (Lloyd’s Register Foundation, 2021)
• 39% of women report workplace sexual harassment in previous 5 years compared to 26% of men (Respect@Work, 2018)
• In the NT, 38.9% of serious mental stress claims are due to bullying during 2021-22 (NT WorkSafe)
• Costing Australia up to $36 billion/year — and employers $17K–$24K per case (Productivity Commission, 2010)

Our own data shows that bullying and workers compensation claims are consistently in the top 5 key issues of why clients seek our assistance.

Bullying is harmful and costly. But it’s preventable. Let’s Act On It — speak up, support others, and help build workplaces where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has launched a multi-year inquiry into widespread non-compliance with workplace laws across the sector.

The FWO is seeking input from everyone connected to the sector – including employers, employees, contractors, clients, and other stakeholders – to share their experiences with workplace practices and issues.

Dear stakeholders, colleagues, members and friends,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce we are departing our Darwin home of 23 years and are relocating to a new, larger office space in Darwin City. This move follows our successful efforts in securing ongoing funding in 2024, which has enabled us to thrive, grow, expand our services, and better meet the needs of our community.

While we are filled with excitement for the growth and expansion this move represents, there is a profound sense of nostalgia as we bid farewell to the place that has been our home and foundation for over two decades. The space has been a silent partner in our journey and holds countless memories of all the joy and adversity we have faced. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful owners, Sue and Hugh, whose unwavering support and kindness have helped make this chapter of our story possible. We will forever cherish the relationship we've built over the years.

NTWWC had a busy and rewarding day on Friday at the 2025 Darwin Disability Expo on Friday. This free and inclusive event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and other services especially from the Disability Sector about our work and workplace issues.

We delivered a Basic Rights at Work information session to students at St Joseph’s Catholic College, equipping them with essential knowledge as they prepare to enter the workforce. Our Senior Industrial Liaison Officer, Emily was also able to provide advice to clients, thanks to the generous support of KWILS, who kindly offered us the use of their office space. Last but certainly not least, we had plenty of meetings and catch-ups, strengthening existing connections and building new ones as we gear up for some exciting events during our next visit – stay tuned!

On Monday 5 May 2025 we marched together for May Day- for workers rights, celebrating the granting of the 8 hour working day, and what can be achieved through collective action to improve conditions and entitlements.

Today we also marched against the misuse of non-disclosure agreements in sexual harassment and discrimination settlement matters intended to silence the voice of the employee and protect the employer and also the wrong doer.

Wouldn’t it be novel to see the strength, compassion and courage of an organisation who stands up when this happens, owns it, shares it and states we can do better and this is what we are doing rather than hiding behind it, sometimes inadvertently or by design silencing victims and perpetuating the problem.

On Saturday 8 March 2025, the NTWWC officially launched their research project Experiences of Women and Gender Diverse People Living and Working in the Northern Territory (NT) through the 'This is Not Art' exhibition in Alice Springs. This interactive installation showcased stories generously shared with us of women and gender diverse people's experiences of living and working in the NT, exploring their hopes and realities, while inviting viewers to share their story.

Once a year, internationally we get to celebrate just being and reflecting on how we got here, what we’ve achieved while we continue to strive for gender equity and equality.

Paid Parental Leave Amendment (Improvement for Families and Gender Equality) Bill 2022.

On February 20th, we appeared before the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee together with advocates Georgie Dent, The Parenthood, Emma Walsh, Parents At Work & Advancing Parental Leave Equality Network, Lisa Annese and Catherine Brown, Diversity Council Australia Ltd and Dr Leonora Risse to share our views about the Paid Parental Leave Amendment (Improvement for Families and Gender Equality) Bill 2022.

Whilst there is support for the Bill, which seeks to make paid parental leave available to other carers and enable families to make decisions about leave allocations/work, we are seeking to extend the period of paid leave, extend eligibility to migrant workers on temporary working visas, bring payments more in line with actual income replacement than based on minimum wage rates in order to make it more accessible and affordable, have super payable on payments and strengthen provisions relating to domestic and family violence just to name a few...

They began a campaign for the right to work that lasted for fourteen years. Their battle against BHP, the country’s richest and most powerful company, took them from factory gate to the highest court in the land and changed the rules for women throughout Australia.
NTWWC Funding Crisis Update

Early Christmas Present for the NTWWC - 24 Dec 2021

On this special Christmas Eve, we are thrilled to announce we have gained funding, including support from a generous donor, that has secured our future for the next few years. This will provide us with some exciting opportunities and we'll share more about this in the New Year.

This funding means we will continue to operate at full capacity (subject to filling staff vacancies).

Thank you to all who supported and advocated for us. Our battle for adequate recurrent funding is not yet over. No further updates or commitments have been received in relation to Recommendation 49 of the Respect@Work Report to provide increased and recurrent funding to working women’s centres. However, for now at least working women in the NT will continue to have a safe place to seek support when things go wrong.

The new funding also gives our team secure employment.

Have a wonderful and safe festive season. It is definitely a more positive feeling for us this year than it was last year leading up to Xmas.

Our Office will be closed 12.30pm Christmas Eve until Tues 4th January.

           Kind regards

As we have seen by the recent disclosures of women’s experiences of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace which resulted in a national March4Justice on 15 March 2021, equality, safety and respect for women in the workplace and broader society remains a real issue. This needs to change.

released in March 2020 following a national inquiry into sexual harassment in Australian workplaces. Recommendation 49 specifically states that:

"Australian governments provide increased and recurrent funding to working women's centres to provide information, advice and assistance to vulnerable workers who experience sexual harassment, taking into account particular needs of workers facing intersectional discrimination. Australian governments should consider establishing or re-establishing working women's centres in jurisdictions where they do not currently exist."

Making women's workplaces safe and fair is long overdue. Implementation of the Recommendations of the Respect@Work Report starting with Recommendation 49 as an imperative in refunding services currently at risk such as the NTWWC and in Queensland needs to happen now.

We received disappointing news recently that our core funding from the Fair Work Ombudsman under the Federal Community Engagement Grant will not be continuing.

There have been many changes to employment rights with the recent initiatives rolled out by the Federal Government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. NTWWC has prepared a factsheet to assist workers in the community services sector to better support clients who have concerns about their workplace rights in relation to these changes.

Launch of Work Aware brings specialised training to Territory workplaces

Territory workplaces can now undertake training delivered by experts in domestic and family violence, bullying and sexual harassment.

Work Aware has been developed by local professionals with more than 20 years’ experience in industrial relations who are passionate about building strong and supportive workplaces.

One in three women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and nearly two thirds of women who report violence by a current partner are in the paid workforce. Similarly, Work Aware Director, Rachael Uebergang explains one in four women, and one in seven men have experienced sexual harassment at work in the past five years.

“Unfortunately, we have seen through our work at the NT Working Women’s Centre, things like domestic violence, sexual harassment and bullying are common in the workplace,” Rachael said.

“Work Aware equips all levels of an organisation with the tools needed to respond appropriately to these problems and implement effective workplace policy.”

The program was officially launched last night and currently offers three different training packages:

Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware

Work Aware staff are also accredited providers of national Our Watch training packages.

The NT Working Women’s Centre has been delivering the Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware training for three years already in partnership with other states’ Centres around Australia.

“We have had really great responses and results delivering Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware in almost every state in the country,” Rachael said.

“Not only does the training ensure impacted employees are being responded to appropriately, it reduces the impacts on the workplace such as lateness, increased leave, lack of productivity and underperformance.”

Work Aware hosts private tailored sessions as well as regular sessions open to the public. Find out more about

Becoming a Friend or Member of the NTWWC builds a stronger and more connected organisation. The strength of our organisation has a direct impact on our ability to continue to do what we currently are, well into the future.

It's true that women have made incredible gains across the workforce. It's hard to imagine a time when women were required to resign from their employment when they were married, or weren't allowed to work at all. But there's still so much to do in the areas of pregnancy and return to work discrimination, sexual harassment, the impact of domestic and family violence at work and the gender pay gap. Working Women's Centres are as needed and relevant as ever.

Please become a Friend or Member. If you've already signed up, THANK YOU!

Are you ready for the new Award provisions?

Did you know that from the 1st of August 2018 Modern Awards include five days of unpaid domestic and family violence leave? The leave applies to all employees, including casuals, and is the result of a claim made by the ACTU to the Fair Work Commission.

Now that domestic and family violence leave is a recognised industrial entitlement for Award based workers, it is time to check whether your organisation is equipped to respond appropriately to domestic and family violence at work. We can assist by providing training, policy templates and more.

Our three hour Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware workshop is specifically designed to meet the needs of managers, HR personnel, team leaders and supervisors so that they know how to respond when staff are impacted by domestic and family violence. The workshop incorporates the new Modern Award provisions so that training participants understand what the entitlement is and what is needed to comply.

You can learn more about the content of the workshop at our specialised Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware website and register to attend the Darwin session online; Friday the 7th of September and Monday the 19th of November from 8:30 - 11:30. Send an email to

The NTWWC is proud to bring you three events for October Business Month.

We are holding 2 low price sessions of the Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware workshops on FRIDAY OCTOBER 6TH at 10am and MONDAY OCTOBER 16TH at 12.30pm. For OBM, the price is $15 per person. (These sessions usually cost $220 for not-for-profit participants and $440 for government/corporate participants). The sessions are aimed at managers, supervisors and HR staff and will equip them with the skills to appropriately support and manage staff who are experiencing domestic and family violence.

We are also holding a forum bringing you the latest national research on this topic, as well as the experiences and insights of local business leaders in implementing their own domestic and family violence strategies. The forum will be held on OCTOBER 13th at 11am and costs $40 including a light lunch.

Unpaid DV Leave Likely to Become a Feature of Australian Workplaces

A decision of the Fair Work Commission has rejected the ACTU claim for 10 days paid domestic and family violence leave for Award based workers.

Whilst the decision is extremely disappointing for victim employees of domestic and family violence, the door remains open for the inclusion of unpaid domestic and family violence leave. It is also likely that new provisions will be inserted into Awards which allow employees to take personal/carers's leave for issues associated with domestic and family violence. Importantly the decision states that unpaid leave serves to confirm the significance of family and domestic violence leave as a workplace right.

What does this mean for you? It means that if you or your workplace has Award based workers then now is the time to prepare for these upcoming industrial changes.

See this article for more details on the Fair Work Commission decision, go to our new website or give us a call for assistance on how to respond to these important changes in the industrial relations landscape.

NT and SA WWCs saved, QLD WWC not so lucky

The very dark cloud that has been hanging over our heads for the bulk of this year has lifted. We are so relieved and excited to be able to share the news that our application for funding to the Commonwealth has been successful.

NT and SA Working Women's Centres have been given a lifeline from the Commonwealth government, but we are deeply saddened that our sisters at Queensland Working Women's Service have not been so lucky. They were unsuccessful in their bid.

Whilst we will not be getting the same amount as in previous years, we are so very relieved that we can at least keep the doors open in both Darwin and Alice Springs. The funding has been confirmed for the next 4 years, but there has been an overall cut of 15% per annum.

This means that on the day to day level we will either need to cut back services or seek alternate ways of securing revenue. Needless to say, we are determined not to cut back on our services.

We are working hard to develop income streams and a fundraising calendar to make up the shortfall. With your help and support, we know that we will achieve our targets.

We could not have done this without the support of the community and we thank you for working to ensure that the doors of the NT Working Women's Centre will re-open for the 23rd consecutive year on the 3rd of January, 2017.

When Domestic Violence Comes to Work

MEDIA RELEASE – When Domestic Violence Comes to Work

Milly is a kitchenhand, working in a busy restaurant. Milly is a mother of three. Milly is also a victim of domestic violence. Sometimes Milly’s partner hides her keys so she is late to work. Sometimes Milly is too embarrassed to go to work because of the bruises on her face. Milly has taken all of her sick leave and annual leave to attend to court dates and hospital appointments for herself and her children. Milly can’t afford to lose her job, as without it, there is no way she could leave the relationship. Milly’s boss is frustrated because she has been late so often and has taken so much leave, and her performance at work is slipping. He suspects something is going on, but he doesn’t know what to say to Milly.

As part of the #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the NT Working Women’s Centre would like to bring attention to the role that workplaces can play in preventing and responding to domestic and family violence.

For a long time, domestic violence was seen as a private issue. Now we know that this is not the case, and that we all have a role and responsibility to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence. This includes workplaces.

We know that 2 out of every 3 women who experience domestic and family violence are in paid employment.[1] We also know that D&FV affects the attendance, performance and safety of employees, and consequently reduces the productivity of Australian workplaces, costing $2.1 billion per year.[2]

Keeping one’s job is crucial to maintaining economic security and is a key pathway to leaving a violent relationship.

Awareness has also been growing about the positive contribution workplaces can make to the wellbeing and economic security of employees experiencing D&FV. Workplaces can respond by providing paid domestic violence leave, introducing domestic violence policies, implementing safety plans for affected staff, and ensuring that management are trained in how to respond.

Almost 40% of large agencies now have a domestic violence policy and/or strategy to support their employees[3]. This has increased by 7% over the last two years. Now is the time for more workplaces to step up and address this issue.

Most employers and managers want to help, but don’t know where to start, what to say, or what to do.

The NT Working Women’s Centre offers expert policy advice and training to workplaces who want to support their employees and take a stance on domestic and family violence. Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.

Six months of funding brings no certainty

The future is uncertain for the NTWWC with the 2016 budget providing only 6 months of funding.

NTWWC funding, which was due to end on 30 June, has now been extended until the 31st of December. Whilst we welcome the opportunity to continue to provide services to vulnerable women workers, the NTWWC is still de-funded as at the the end of this year.

There was an enormous outpouring of community support to the news that the service would be forced to close the Alice Springs office and turn away 2 out of 3 clients from July this year. Thank you to all of you who supported us.

We still need your support. The NTWWC still seeks sustainable funding for a minimum four year term so that services NT women have expected for the last 22 years can continue in 2017.

The NTWWC is the only source of free, specialised, industrial information and advice for vulnerable working women in the NT, and has been continuously funded by the Federal Government since opening in 1994. Our Federal funding contract terminates on 30 June 2016, and the Federal government has made no commitment to ongoing funding.

For over 20 years, the NTWWC has advocated for thousands of vulnerable Territory women with workplace issues such as pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, termination of employment, the impact of domestic violence on work, and workplace bullying.

As a valued member, supporter or friend of the NTWWC, we seek your support. Please send a letter, email or phone call to Senator Michaelia Cash, Federal Minister for Women and Minister for Employment. We have included a form letter below that you can cut and paste, but feel free to send your own letter or add a personal story and/or information on how the issue affects you, your family, or your organisation. The more personal your letter, the more impact it is likely to have. If appropriate, attach it to your letterhead.

Consultation on Pregnancy and Return to Work Discrimination - November 13th

The Australian Human Rights Commission is holding a consultation in Darwin on Wednesday November 13th. The topic of the consultation is Discrimination in relation to pregnancy and return to work.

There are two consultations planned for Wednesday November 13th in Darwin:

1 - 2.30pm for individual men and women

           3 - 4.30pm for community services

This is the first time there has ever been a national data collection and research project on discrimination against women and men returning to work after parental leave, and only the second time since 1999 on discrimination against pregnant women at work. An Issues Paper is attached with more information.

The attached invitations provide information about RSVPing etc. The consultation is only being held in Darwin in the NT, but please contact me if you are from outside Darwin and wish to participate.

It is vital that we get as many women, men and services involved in these consultations as possible, so that we can get an accurate picture of the challenges facing this group and have an evidence base to work towards policy, legislative and cultural reform.

Please feel free to send these invitations on to any individuals who would like to share their story about challenges faced in the workplace while pregnant, on parental leave, or upon returning to work, and the consequences for them, their family and their career. Please also send it on to other services who work with these individuals or in this area.

Please do not hesitate to contact either me or the AHRC contacts if you need further information, or if you would like to participate but are outside Darwin.

Kind regards

LOCAL WORKING WOMEN HONOURED BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL VISIT – 19 August 2013

A small Alice Springs community organisation will be honoured on Monday afternoon by a visit by the Governor-General, Her Excellency, the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO. Co-Coordinator of the NT Working Women’s Centre Committee, Rachael Uebergang, said she was delighted to hear of the impending visit and considered it a great honour.

The NT Working Women’s Centre opened in Darwin in 1994. The Alice Springs office was officially opened in Alice Springs in March 2013 due to funding support from the Commonwealth and NT Governments. The Governor General visited the NT Working Women’s Centres Darwin office in 2009 and 2012 and is Patron-in-Chief of National Working Women’s Centres.

‘We are delighted that the Governor-General will visit the new NT Working Women’s Centre office in Alice Springs and we are very pleased that she recognises the importance of the work we do in helping women combat issues such as sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination at work. We are the only free and confidential service of our kind in the NT’.

The Working Women’s Centre will host an invite only afternoon tea with the Governor General. The Governor General will have the opportunity to discuss the types of workplace issues that are unique to women in the Centre with locally based Industrial Liaison Officer Anne Hebert.

The Centre Coordinator, Rachael Uebergang said, ‘The role of Working Women’s Centres is to raise women’s awareness of their workplace rights and options under current legislative frameworks. The Governor-General has done much in her career to advance the equal rights of women and we expect to have a lot to talk about once again during her visit.’

The NT Working Women’s Centre dealt with over 2,500 contacts in the 2012-2013 year from women all over the NT who have workplace problems. They provide free and confidential information, support and advice to Territory women on work related issues. The main matters which women present with are termination of employment, employment conditions including remuneration, workplace bullying and discrimination.

ALERA NT, in conjunction with the NT Working Women's Centre, are delighted to offer our first training session for 2103 - Advocacy Training.

The role of the advocate in the adversary system is to persuade the decision maker of the merits of the client's case. Advocates must be up to that task, so that client interests are properly represented.

This practical, hands on training would be suitable for any HR practitioners, Union officials, employer representatives or industrial advocates who represent their clients and members in industrial matters, such as unfair dismissals, general protections applications and anti discrimination claims.

Training will be facilitated by Georgia McMaster, a Barrister at Magayamirr Chambers. Newcomers will learn the essential skills of advocacy and seasoned advocates can perfect their skills.
